Introduction to Usul al-Fiqh
Estimated time: 20 minutes
Usul al-Fiqh is the methodology used to derive Islamic rulings (fiqh) from the primary sources.
The Four Primary Sources:
- Quran - The word of Allah
- Sunnah - Teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ)
- Ijma - Scholarly consensus
- Qiyas - Analogical reasoning
Secondary Sources (Disputed):
- Istihsan (Juristic preference)
- Maslahah Mursalah (Public interest)
- Urf (Custom)
- Sadd adh-Dharai (Blocking the means)
Different schools of thought (madhahib) have varying approaches to these sources.
