Introduction to Usul al-Fiqh

Estimated time: 20 minutes

Usul al-Fiqh is the methodology used to derive Islamic rulings (fiqh) from the primary sources.

The Four Primary Sources:

  1. Quran - The word of Allah
  2. Sunnah - Teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ)
  3. Ijma - Scholarly consensus
  4. Qiyas - Analogical reasoning

Secondary Sources (Disputed):

  • Istihsan (Juristic preference)
  • Maslahah Mursalah (Public interest)
  • Urf (Custom)
  • Sadd adh-Dharai (Blocking the means)

Different schools of thought (madhahib) have varying approaches to these sources.
